text Egyptian-Style Roles in a Tech Project | أدوار المشروع التقني على الطريقة المصرية

Business Development & Management

Technical Development

Marketing

What if we split a company or tech project into teams, Egyptian-style?

We’d discover three main characters, each with a specialty—and a signature exclamation for when something goes wrong!

1. “Ya Kharashi!” 😎

Business Development & Management

Kharashi is responsible for growing the business and managing the project. They think about the project’s direction and goals, its target customers, and how to achieve sustainable growth. They also organize resources, teams, and responsibilities, and help choose the right business model. In short, Kharashi turns an idea into an organized project with clear goals and a plan.

But Kharashi isn’t expected to write code, design databases, or assume every idea is technically feasible just because they’re excited about it! When there’s no planning or structure and everyone is doing their own thing, that’s when you say: “Ya Kharashi!”—roughly, “Oh, what a mess!”

2. “Ya Lahwy!” 🤯

Technical Development

Lahwy is the technical developer who turns ideas and requirements into real products and solutions. They think about how to build the idea, which system architecture makes sense, and what tools and technologies to use. They build applications and databases, work to ensure performance, security, and reliability, and test and improve the product over time. In short, Lahwy builds the product and makes it work.

But Lahwy isn’t expected to invent customer needs, set the business strategy, or market the product just because they know how to code! When the system goes down, the code breaks, or the server decides to take a nap, that’s when you say: “Ya Lahwy!”—an Egyptian exclamation of alarm, like “Oh no!”

3. “Ya Da El-3ady!” 😂

Marketing

Da El-3ady is responsible for bringing the product to the market and getting it in front of people. They think about the target audience, why people need the product, and how best to communicate its value. They also work on building the brand, reaching customers, creating demand, and turning interested prospects into actual customers. In short, Da El-3ady helps people discover the product, understand its value, and want to buy it.

But Da El-3ady isn’t expected to make promises the product can’t keep, promote features that haven’t been built, or declare the product ready just because the ad looks great! When the product exists and works but nobody knows about it—or people know about it and still don’t want to buy it—that’s when you say: “Ya Da El-3ady!”

So, what’s the problem? 😂

The trouble starts when the roles overlap and everyone decides to do someone else’s job. Kharashi declares the product ready before Lahwy has even started building it. Lahwy builds a brilliant system nobody needs. And Da El-3ady markets a product that’s still just an idea in Kharashi’s head!

Then Kharashi says, “I did my part!” Lahwy replies, “I built exactly what you asked for!” And Da El-3ady says, “I brought you the customers—now figure it out!” Meanwhile, the customer is stuck in the middle asking, “Wait, how did I end up here?!” 😂

The takeaway

Every successful project needs all three: Kharashi develops the business, manages the project, and sets its direction; Lahwy develops the technical solution and builds the product; and Da El-3ady markets the product and connects it with the market and its customers.

No role is more important than the others, and no specialty can replace another. Success doesn’t mean everyone does everyone else’s job. It means each person understands their role and responsibilities—and knows how to work well with the others.

Ya Kharashi! Ya Lahwy! Ya Da El-3ady!
All three have to work together, or the whole project will end up needing to say: “Ya Moseebti!”—“Oh, what a disaster!” 🤣
